It’s no secret that communication can lead to misunderstandings. People tend to see language skills as a precondition for participating in social processes.

But what happens when although we speak the same languages, our terms of reference are totally different? Can smartphone kids and Web 2.0 users still talk about the advantages and disadvantages of a fax machine? And if so, do they need emojis?

Communication is essential in order to exchange views and experiences and to collaborate. But are there any possibilities beyond language that allow us to live together as equals? All too often do we forget that we not only need to translate between languages. Instead, we need cultural, social and even historical translations. Or, in very simple terms: can we assume that we understand each other when we lack a common horizon of experience? The following steirischer herbst productions deal with questions of translatability in a wide range of different contexts.

“Beatrice Gibson” Grazer Kunstverein
“Zerstören” esc medien kunst labor

This Saturday again we will be trying to give visitors some initial insights into the exhibitions on show at Künstlerhaus, Halle für Kunst & Medien, Grazer Kunstverein, and esc medien kunst labor – this time around under the overall theme of communication. Can art only be expressed by way of performances or is performance simply art? The role of the voice and language in the work of “Beatrice Gibson” is certainly to communicate; at esc, on the other hand, it is about “Destroying”: but can it express that too?

Workshop “Express yourself!”

In cooperation with DruckZeug

Struggling to understand/be understood necessarily revolves around the unambiguous nature of signs. Typography offers a particularly diverse playing field of allocation of meanings on the basis of size, colour, font and symbolism. The DruckZeug association’s workshop invites you to explore analogue – meanwhile almost historical – printing machines and to create your own messages. Hands on printing!
