Avant-garde composition meets contemporary film meets white cube: Grazer Kunstverein mounts a solo show for British artist Beatrice Gibson, presenting her film work from the past ten years.

Beatrice Gibson, born in 1978, is an artist and film-maker from London. Inspired by the legendary Fluxus movement and greats of avant-garde music including John Cage, she explores voice, language, collective production and questions of representation. While Gibson’s film narratives appear fragmentary when viewed in isolation, they piece together to make up a cogent, never-ending artistic process and work.
For the first time, the exhibition in Graz presents a wide range of Gibson’s films from the past ten years, in which the artist above all explores structural parallels between music and economy.
In “F for Fibonacci” from 2014, for instance, Gibson links a scene in William Gaddis’ novel “JR” to combine the aesthetics of the computer game “Minecraft” with descriptive geometry, physical experiments, cartoons and images of Wall Street crashes. “The Tiger’s Mind” ( 2012 ) draws on a musical score as the basis for generating language. There will also be films showing in the Members Library, with the artist having carte blanche to select works that have influenced her.
