Or are we in fact the “rest of the world”? How do notions of good and evil come about and are there some things that people everywhere see as beautiful and desirable? Across generations, ages and cultures? If so, where do these guidelines come from? Do fashions even exist, and who defines them? Discussions about globalisation and migration focus on exchange between people, including their culture(s).
To some, this appears dangerous, to others, necessary and fruitful for the further development of our society. Numerous steirischer herbst productions therefore look into the question of what it means to change one’s perspective and indeed to become aware of one’s perspective. And thus to preempt such hasty judgements as “Too young!”, “Too loud!” or “Too foreign!”.

Our short visits to the main steirischer herbst show and the exhibitions at Kunsthaus Graz, Camera Austria and Forum Stadtpark focus on the aspect of the perspectivity of our perception. What forms of communication do we carry with us as “Body Luggage”, how can performance be translated into sculpture, what knowledge can be found in porcelain, and is Europe really a palace?

One or the other? The own or the alien? Mine or yours? What is what? Seeing things through “spectacles” can often help us see things more clearly. But what effect do these spectacles have on what we see and does changing this visual aid change the way we see certain things? Does it make a difference from where we look at things, from Europe, from Asia, from a tree or while lying flat on the ground? And what spectacles allow us to see the truth, if it even exists? This workshop offers numerous spectacles with different lenses. In the end, though, it’s up to you which ones you choose.
