The Flamingods are homeless in the most productive of senses. Since a change in residence law forced band founder Kamal Rasool to leave London, where he was studying, and to return to Bahrain, his band the Flamingods have been operating on an intercontinental basis. The unusual toolbox of this quintet, founded in 2009, consists of a versatile collection of instruments from countries such as Nepal, Thailand, Indonesia, Turkey, Japan and Tanzania. Drawing on Asian sound textures, African rhythms and a keen instinct for pop songs, the Flamingods weave a colourful psychedelic tapestry, impressively adding a spiritual category to the sound of their inspirations, from Animal Collective to Deerhunter. Often the Flamingods carry out their globe-spanning experiments digitally, on the Internet – but they are coming to steirischer herbst live and direct.
